How’s u.s winter weather changing for a large portion of this week, the US National Weather Service has issued warnings of “life-threatening” low temperatures in a number of states, with “significant snow and ice” predicted over large areas of the nation.A surge of polar air is driving subzero temperatures and snow down over much of North America, engulfing large portions of the United States and Canada in severe winter weather.
Meteorologists like Ben Noll of The Washington Post have predicted temperatures in the northern states of Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota, which are bordering Canada, to be below minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 degrees Celsius), with wind chill making it feel considerably colder.
Understanding A Polar Vortex:
Climate change’s effects are uncertain. The northern Arctic region has warmed up to four times faster than the rest of the world, indicating that some regions of the planet have warmed more rapidly than others.
Some experts have connected this dramatic warmth, referred to as Arctic amplification, to the weakening of the two polar vortices—the stratospheric polar vortex higher above and the jet stream at lower altitudes.
Climate Change May Result In Greater Snow And Extreme Cold:
A “stretched polar vortex” event that has plunged down into North America is partly to blame for this most recent fierce winter blast, according to Judah Cohen, a winter storm specialist at the private US-based research organization Atmospheric and Environmental Research. Cohen participated in a 2021 study that indicated “climate change in general, but Arctic change in particular, is favorable for forcing these events.” The report was published in Science.He predicted that the tenth polar vortex disruption of the winter will bring “record cold temperatures” to the eastern United States and “severe winter weather” to East Asia and North America.
